Apr 26, 2016 · The current firmware for the WRT54GL with Kernel 26 is already over 4 MB. But the actual limit for firmware on this device is limited to 3.68 MB. The only firmware supporting VPN that fits is running on Kernel 24. Because of this we will be using the TomatoUSB firmware "tomato-ND-1.28.5x-110-VPN.trx" in the K24 directory, which is 3.47 MB in size.
Mar 10, 2016 · I've been an ardent user of the Tomato Linux Open Source router firmware, specifically on the ASUS RT-N66U home routers using the 'Shibby' builds. They let you take full advantage of enterprise (and kitchen sink) features on the broadcom-based residential routers with support for OpenVPN, TOR, VLANs and a litany of other useful functions.
On the 2.4GHz channel, Tomato by Shibby gets us an average speed of 56mbps (compared between 3 tests), while DD-WRT slightly fell behind with 50mbps. And on the 5GHz channel too, Tomato by Shibby gets us an average speed of over 100mbps, while compared to just 95mpbs on an average with DD-WRT.
